Substance Use among Older Adults

The WVU Research Office held a hybrid event on Substance Use among Older Adults featuring guest speaker Dr. Alexis Kuerbis, an Associate Professor at Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

She is a licensed clinical social worker with 20 years of experience in a variety of clinical, public health and social services settings and specializing in substance abuse treatment. Dr. Kuerbis’ research focuses on two major areas. The first is mechanisms of behavior change for problem drinkers--both within brief treatments (e.g., motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy) and social service interventions (e.g., case management) and outside treatment settings. The second area, which was born out of the first in 2011, is older adults who use mood-altering substances.

This event was hosted by the Research Office in conjunction with the Aging Research and Substance Use and Recovery Research Collaborator Groups.
